Where to apply with an average BMAT score?

  • What should I do if I score on average in the BMAT?
  • What is an average BMAT score?
  • Where should I apply if my BMAT score is average?
  • What universities accept average BMAT score?

1. Introduction

Given the small range of BMAT scores (1-9), a small difference, 0.1 for example could be the difference between being on average or above average. Consequently, your application may be affected by this slight difference, especially if the university you’re thinking of has cut-off scores.

Of course, the higher your BMAT score the better it is. Even though we recommend certain universities here if you score within a certain range, this post is just a guidance. We strongly recommend that you conduct your own research and formulate your opinion. Indeed, what we have below may not work for everyone. So it’s very important to realise the limits of what we, and other companies, can provide you with during your application. In addition, this is our own opinion and is subject to change in the future.

Brighton & Sussex Medical School

To start with, at Brighton & Sussex, the personal statement is not used here. This diverts the attention of the university to other aspects of the application such as BMAT.

1️⃣ The first stage of processing the applications is by checking the academia and making sure that it is of the university’s standards.
2️⃣ Then applicants are ranked according to their BMAT score.*

*The BMAT score is calculated by adding up the scores of all three sections. The grade for quality of English is quantified and is worth a maximum of 5 points.

When adding up the numbers, the overall BMAT score is out of 28. There is a cut-off score. It varies every year according to the cohort’s performance:

📈 For example, from 2017 to 2018 the average changed from 17.3 to 16.4.
    📈 In 2019, the average was 16.1.

These scores play around the average area making Brighton & Sussex worth considering if you have scored in that area.

You can find free BMAT resources and free practice questions here on our website.

Lancaster University

There is no clear cut-off score for the BMAT here. It is basically just one aspect of the application that is used alongside others, such as GCSEs, predicted grades, personal statement and reference.

It is worth mentioning that you are likely to have to discuss your essay during your interview. Also, there is no section that is more important than others to Lancastre.

It seems that all sections are considered. For the sake of performing well if asked about your essay, we recommend you write as much as you can remember of that essay straight after you do the BMAT. That way you can remind yourself of what you wrote before your interview date.

⚡ Overall, in the case of Lancaster, higher scorers are more likely to have a successful application than lower scorers.
